Meet Jenn Rose

About: Text
Family Garden

Jenn's story begins in the garden as a youngster hot on the heels of her parents and grandparents.

Smelling, tasting, and feeling the earth whisper its wisdom of what to plant, where to plant it, and when. Gardening and eco-conscious living has been second nature to this playful and heart-centered professional.

As Jenn grew older and upon graduating University from Environmental Engineering...

She felt the call to go exploring and toured Europe for many months before landing in British Columbia where she worked as a Project Coordinator for Katimavik in the Okanagan Valley and Vancouver Island, and then as a Supervisor for a Wilderness Company where she found her happy place with her hands on the land as a tree planter. Although Jenn thrived in this environment and was highly regarded in the field (ha! Get it) her roots soon yearned to be back East, closer to her family.

On the way back across Canada...

Jenn was offered a job with a local utility company as a Forestry Technician. She was happy to accept the offer and put down roots in Sault Ste Marie, a small community in Northern Ontario.

From Forestry Technician, Jenn was promoted to Supervisor where she designed vegetation management programs and co-authored the IPM Manual For Public Works through the Ontario Vegetation Management Association, as well as, The Field Guide to Integrated Vegetation Management along Corridors in Northern Ontario. From here, her career quickly progressed with more leadership opportunities in Health & Safety, First Nations Engagement, and Environmental Sustainability where she continues to serve her community to this very day.

The birth of Urban Homesteaders...

Came out of deep frustration with the devastating state of food and the poor quality of declining health that Jenn was noticing in herself and others. Wanting to grow her own food and take back control of her health, Jenn called upon the wisdom of her parents and those earlier years in the garden to create her first urban homestead in 2005. With her deep desire to live with nature, and in harmony with her environment this first garden created a spark in her heart that quickly grew into a blazing fire over the coming years.

At the beginning of 2021...

And its imposed restrictions and poor treatment of people and life in general -  something began stirring within Jenn’s heart. She struggled with feelings of heart-ache and sorrow as she watched the price of food skyrocket while the quality of food diminished. Witnessing of long line ups of good-hearted people who were completely reliant upon big stores for their food made Jenn's head spin in disbelief.

With the high price for healthy food on the rise, she knew she had to take Urban Homesteaders to the next level by devoting more of her time to teaching people how to grow their own food.

"Good food shouldn't be expensive!"

Words Jenn would find herself repeating over the years as she helped people design and grow in their unique spaces. It didn’t matter if they had a window, a balcony, a back deck, a backyard or acres of land - Jenn put her 20 years of gardening experience into action to help them design growing spaces that would be sustainable by teaching them soil quality, water collection, succession planting, strategic storage, proper composting and so much more.

Her desire to educate and make a difference in people’s lives has led to families halving their grocery bills, relationships mending and becoming stronger because of time spent together in the garden, and clients being less stressed, happier, healthier and eager to share what they’ve been learning - which for Jenn, is the best part!

About: Image

Her deepest desire is to share with you how easy it is to grow your own food and break through the barriers of size and space.

Growing your own food is your birthright. It's in your blood, bones and DNA. It is something our grandparents have done for lifetimes ahead of us and if given the chance, Jenn will help you to actively live your heritage - soul to soil.

She encourages us to honour our ancestors by honouring the 7 generations that have come before us and the 7 generations that will come after us. What we do today matters. How we live today matters. All it takes is an open-mind, a willingness to learn and a little bit of time with your hands in the dirt.

We invite you to book your virtual garden consultation today so that you can get growing right away!
